This is a large multi plume (several smoke images blended together) smoke art picture depicting flame. Representing flame with smoke is not too much of a leap, they both issue from the same sort of environment.
Well over a year ago I started a big project to revisit smoke photography or smoke art as it is more commonly called. I had certain goals, I wanted to review the whole procedure from studio setup, through post processing to the finished picture, I wanted to find a way to create larger pictures, and I intended to investigate as many creative possibilities as I could imagine.
The project went well and I was producing work that was satisfying these goals. Then, before the completion of the project I became unwell, and all work stopped. Recently I have been trying to pick up the pieces. Originally I had planned to have two new collections, Smoke Art, and Smoke Wheels, also an article describing the methods used and what I had discovered along the way.
Today, a year late, I am publishing the first part, the new Smoke Art collection. Some new smoke pictures, some old. The Smoke Wheels collection and the Article will follow soon.
Dip your toe in cautiously and visit the smoke art thumbnails page, or dive headlong into the new smoke art collection.
This is a picture of smoke from a burning incense stick. Most smoke appears grey to the naked eye but there is more in a plume of smoke than we see at first glance. For this type of smoke art photo it is necessary to make adjustments in the digital darkroom to allow the natural beauty of the smoke to be revealed.
By post processing the image and adjusting such variables as colour temperature, saturation, contrast and any other setting that seems fitting to the artist, a richer vision of smoke can be created.
See Tips on photographing smoke for more a more detailed description of how to photograph smoke.
