Nowhere near as attractive as a cuddly hoverfly, the greenbottle fly is a species of blowfly. These flies (Phaenicia sericata) can be found all round the world.
The maggots of this fly were once used in medicine as they would eat dead tissue and leave live tissue alone. Nowadays you can choose to pack your wound with maggots or use antibiotics.
