Coloured smoke photography

Picture too big or too small, check out the page size options at the top right of the page. Just set it once and forget it.
This picture was taken in 2005 it concentrates on smoothness with a relatively subtle colour shift from one end to the other.

For a long time people have been asking me how big can I print a particular smoke picture, and usually they imagine something large to hang on the wall. This is not always possible, a picture will break down if stretched too far. I now classify smoke pictures in rough sizes of: web only, books or magazines, wall art and massive. I guess massive is really large wall art.

This picture is of medium size suitable for printing in books or magazines but not really big enough for wall art. In the Image Capture Data section below there is an entry called Orig. crop which shows the original pixel size of the image after cropping.

This is a picture of smoke from a burning incense stick. Most smoke appears grey to the naked eye but there is more in a plume of smoke than we see at first glance. For this type of smoke art photo it is necessary to make adjustments in the digital darkroom to allow the natural beauty of the smoke to be revealed.

By post processing the image and adjusting such variables as colour temperature, saturation, contrast and any other setting that seems fitting to the artist, a richer vision of smoke can be created.

See Tips on photographing smoke for more a more detailed description of how to photograph smoke.
