Some time ago a very good friend of mine came to visit whilst I was enduring a period of depression. He suggested, no doubt in an effort to fire me into action, that I photograph depression. Not a bad idea, as almost impossible challenges go, but as might be expected, I did nothing about it at the time.
The idea stayed with me as I went from darkness into light 3 times over recent years. Just recently, as I was post processing the results of a recent studio portrait session, this picture caught my eye as having potential to fulfil the depression brief so I set about exaggerating the melancholy.
Periods of depression are not helpful to someone who is interested in photo blogging, regular updates are what is required, so taking 9 months off each year is not the best way to build a following. Every time I come into the light I hope it will last forever, and one day it will.
I am writing this because one in three of us will experience some sort of depressive disorder at some time in our lives, a disorder that will make it impossible to continue as normal. I have been unfortunate in that my condition has been recurring for about 10 years to date, but most people who are affected will only have to endure one or two bouts of depression.
To those people who are suffering, and to those around a sufferer I would like to say, hang in there, it won’t last forever, and you will one day move back into the light.
Thanks Bob for the impossible challenge, and thanks also to my model who suffers nothing more serious than good looks.
